Gas is a primary source of energy for many caravans, motorhomes and camper trailers. It provides with many features such as heating, air-conditioning and lighting. However, the responsibility to maintain gas systems falls to individual owners and if they are left unattended to  they can become dangerous.

Below is a list of the Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to caravan gas safety and maintenance.

Do not's

  • Ensure your appliances are switched off before you turn on the cylinder valve
  • Close the cylinder valve when you are not using appliances
  • Check all the gas connections at your appliances, regulators and cylinders for leaks at least once a year.  To do this, put some soapy water in a spray bottle, turn on your LPG gas bottle and spray the valve, regulator and hose with the soapy water.  Bubbles will form in any areas where there are leaks.
  • Regularly check your gas cylinder for corrosion and dents.
  • Store your gas cylinder in an upright position.
  • Replace your gas cylinder if it is over ten years old, or have it tested by an authorized LPG test station.
  • Stamp inspection dates on the cylinder in an obvious place.
  • Use a cooking appliance or stove to heat a room
  • Use a match or a flame to test for a gas leak
  • Leave your appliance valves open when replacing a gas cylinder.
  • Store a gas cylinder in an enclosed space without proper ventilation
  • Make your own alterations to your gas system or appliances.  Alterations can only be made by an authorized person. Contact your appliance manufacturer.
  • Sell your caravan, RV or camper trailer without a gas safety certificate.
  • Leave any gas lines open for an extended period.  They should be covered to protect them from dirt and dust.
  • Attempt to fix any problem with your gas system by yourself.  Shut off the gas and see a specialist.
